 sawyer ballard was born on january 13, 1983 in longport, new jersey. he is the only child of patrick and lisa ballard. despite being the only child, he had a variety of friends growing up to keep himself occupied. he didn't mind the fact that he grew up without any siblings since he managed to make friends with the various neighborhood kids he had growing up.
one of his best friends growing up was jacktravis. he's one out of two people that know everything personal about him. he was never judgemental of jack or his lifestyle. it didn't matter to him because sawyer treated him like family. they had a strong bromance type of relationship as they called it (though in a joking manner). he's been there for jack since day one of their friendship and hasn't left his side since then.
growing up, he's been close to his family on both sides though he has been around andy the most. he's watched his cousin grow up and has been looking out for him after his parents had a falling out and his mother left the family. it changed his views on andy's father, considering him untrustworthy and not worth his time after destroying his aunt's family.
his uncle on his father's side had turned into a bad influence on sawyer, actually getting the boy drunk at the age of nine and letting him smoke his first cigarette at the age of ten. luckily his mother managed to get him to stop before it became worse but once sawyer was in high school, he took up smoking again after becoming stressed with school, work and family. after that, he got busted for underaged drinking at his homecoming dance junior year.
while in high school, he snuck off to a friend's house after school who had a bar in the basement. his friend's father was a bartender and had his own there. it resulted in sawyer's interest to become a bartender. he spent at least six months in his friend's basement, learning the tricks of the trade from his friend's father and boosting his knowledge of the variety of drinks to make. he had to be watched since he was underaged and make sure he wouldn't get drunk once again.
sawyer was known as a big flirt around the campus and it surprised a lot to know that he didn't date anyone. it was until his senior year that it all changed when he met ariana martin. at first he didn't know what exactly to say to her but they both started up a conversation. they soon got together a few weeks into their senior year but the relationship ended once they graduated and left for college in separate directions. they still kept in touch after that.
sawyer packed his bags and moved to louisiana in order to attend the crescent bartending & casino gaming school. despite the time spent in the school was only three weeks for his course, he asked if he could take extra classes to boost his knowledge and get a better understanding of everything. his parents suggested for him to attend one closer in new jersey or even new york but sawyer wanted to get away from everything for a while. once he finished school, he worked at the chris owens club for three years.
despite his love for the big easy, hurricane katrina had left him shaken up. he would have liked to stay but once the hurricane became a catagory five, he quickly packed his personal belongings and as many clothes as possible into his truck. his neighbor was killed by the hurricane and left behind a maltese puppy that was barely a month old. sawyer ended up taking the dog as his own, renaming it gambit, and drove through the south to get back home to longport.
still shaken up by the hurricane, sawyer ended up going back to work after finding a place in new york. he lived in his parents' house while he was searching for a place and found one right in park slope, brooklyn. he took up a job in manhattan at the jekyll & hyde club where he is one of the main bartenders. majority of the time he works in the day but around the weekends he chooses to work nights. reason being that he chose the restaurant is because he enjoys the halloween theme and the entertainment that goes on throughout the whole place.
sawyer's quite the rambunctious laid back kind of guy, loving to play video games, watch movies or hang out with friends. he's obsessed with gambit from x-men a lot that he'll even make his own costume with clothes of his own or sewing it together. whenever he's not working, he's visiting longport to see andy and visit jack since he doesn't like to stay far away from friends and family. there's been talk that andy is about to move in with him but sawyer's giving it some time until he talks it over with his cousin again.
